It would be an exaggeration to say that the North-South Gas Corridor alone has, in the short run, strategic meaning for the whole region. Some Central European countries find it more beneficial to gain direct access to West European gas markets; that is why in harsh contrast with vast cross-border capacities in the East-West direction, the connection in the North–South direction is as yet limited. However, NSI has potential to cause geopolitical breakthrough in the region in the long run. All the more reason then that this idea is not only about physical infrastructure but also LNG terminals, UGS facilities and the creation of functional regional market.
