Date: 11/10/01 THE retiring CEO of Spanish beer giant San Miguel said EU tax chief Frits Bolkestein should act to stop distortions caused by huge duties in some Northern European countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland and the UK. But Felipe San Juan said there should be no moves to set EU-wide threshold rates of duty, which could lead to increases in countries such as Spain and Portugal. "We are saying just solve the problem in the North - where it ain't broke, don't fix it," he told European Voice. Bolkestein is due to brief finance ministers on his plans to amend the EU beer duty regime next week.
