The EU may be heading eastward into the new millenium, but the Commission information policy towards the news media from the applicant countries remains firmly Cold War.

Take the case last week when a reporter from the Polish news agency asked chief spokesman Klaus van der Pas whether the Commission was considering extending its state aid regime for shipyards.

Absolutely not, the reporter was told - only to learn a couple of hours later that it was. When challenged, Van Der Pas admitted that he had known the situation all along, but had been ordered not to say anything.

It is an information policy with which the applicant member states from the East will at least be familiar.
