In its submission to the UK Government’s Balance of Competence Review on EU environment and climate change policy, Open Europe argues that the inflexibility of a fixed EU target for the production of renewable energy has locked the UK into an expensive and unworkable policy while ignoring cheaper methods of reducing CO2 consumption. The EU should not be involved in policies that tie the hands of national governments’ in how they implement emissions reductions or via policies that have a direct impact on a member state’s energy mix.
