Article reported that Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, faced growing pressure within from the SPD and the Greens in Germany to accelerate the introduction of a financial transaction tax in Europe in March 2012, in order to win approval for the eurozone’s new treaty on fiscal discipline in her parliament.

Ms Merkel’s dilemma was that her own coalition partners, the liberal Free Democratic party, were strongly opposed to any FTT, unless it could be agreed for the whole European Union.
