British customs officials visited the European Commission on 7 October 2004 to discuss European Commission allegations that UK customs authorities have reacted too strongly to minor infringements of the excise system. UK officials have been criticised for impounding the cars of 'booze cruise' travellers suspected of breaking the law by importing large quantities of cigarettes and alcohol from the Continent.
