The European Parliament's petitions committee is here to stay. Members have strongly rejected a proposal by British Labour MEP Ken Collins to disband the group as part of an overall review of the role of various parliamentary bodies. Committee members argued that without them, it would be impossible for citizens to exercise their right to petition under the Maastricht Treaty.
