The head of Pfizer, the world's largest drug company, said on 5 November 2001 that the European pharmaceutical industry was losing ground to the United States because of heavy controls on the price of medicines in the European Union. Further, he said that low prices for new drugs in most European countries were hampering innovation and forcing the industry to relocate more activities to the US.
