According to Jean-Michel Godeffroy, an executive at the European Central Bank, banks could benefit from the creation of a Single Euro Payments Area, an integrated payments system intended to allow consumers and businesses to make non-cash euro payments as simply and cheaply as domestic transfers. The European Commission would like SEPA to be operational by 2010.
