Zygmunt Tyszkiewicz is determined to help Poland, his birthplace, when he leaves the European employers' federation UNICE early next year after a 12-and-a half-year stint as secretary-general.

He says his job has been “tremendously demanding, but enormously rewarding”, and he now wants a post which will give him more time of his own.

Tyszkiewicz, 64, took British citizenship in 1955 and already represents a foundation arranging scholarships for Polish researchers. Now he would like to help foster EU relations with Poland as it moves towards accession.

“If I were five years younger, I would stay for another five years,” he says. Instead, he will be spending more time at his newly built holiday home in Corfu.
