Police officers in the United Kingdom could be stripped of their power to stop and search people where there is no evidence of wrongdoing after the practice was declared illegal by the European Court of Human Rights on the 12 January 2010.

The blanket use of stop and search under the 2000 Terrorism Act has become a central part of counterterror policing since the London bombings in July 2005. But the tactic has alarmed civil rights campaigners and Muslim groups, who argue it stigmatises black and Asian men and is being used to target people suspected of non-terrorist activities.
