Article reports that Iceland took a decisive step towards joining the European Union, April 2009, after it elected a left-wing majority government for the first time in its history.

Caretaker prime minister Johanna Sigurdardottir’s Social Democrats, and their coalition partners the Left-Green party, swept to victory as Icelanders used the ballot box to deal a crushing defeat for the conservative party which ruled during the country’s economic collapse in 2008-09.
