PEDRO Solbes, economic and monetary affairs commissioner, took a delivery of euros from the Pope's man in Brussels this week.

Monsignor Faustino Sainz Munõz presented the Spanish commissioner with a commemorative set of the coins minted by the Vatican City State, each bearing the Pope's image on one side.

Spokesman for Solbes, Gerassimos Thomas, rejected suggestions that the event had accorded the Vatican the trappings of an EU member state.

'It was not received as a member state,' said Thomas. 'It's a fact that the Vatican is issuing euros.'

Thomas said two other mini-states, Monaco and San Marino, would be presenting their new coins on 11 April.

Finance ministers agreed in 1998 to let all three territories mint their own euro coins, but no notes, from this year's currency launch. The Vatican's issue is limited to a total of €670,000.
