Date: 02/09/1999 THE man chosen by Romano Prodi to take charge of development policy made a sure but unspectacular debut before the Parliament's development committee. Until he was nominated to join the team, Nielson was the EU's longest-serving development minister. Answering questions about the complimentary and conditionality of aid was therefore little problem for the Dane. The Socialist ex-minister promised to make EU aid more effective, to boost cooperation on development policy and to channel more money to the world's poorest countries. However, the would-be Commissioner was given a bumpier ride by MEPs over his membership of the board of directors of a Danish company which was busted for attempting to set up a cartel. |
