Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister, was hoping that his centre-right Popular party would finally win control of Andalusia from the Socialists in a regional election on the 25 March 2012, a victory that would consolidate the PP’s hold on Spain as it implements wrenching economic reforms.

However, in the event, the governing centre-right Popular party failed to win control of the important southern region of Andalusia from the Socialists in the regional election.
