The European Commission on the 6 August 2014 published information about a new consumer app - made possible thanks to an EU-funded toolbox - which enables consumers to find out if a product is reduced in price because the "best before" date is coming up. The purpose of the app is to help consumers save money but also to help reduce waste, as food close to expiry date is often thrown away by retailers, and as a result, 90 million tons of edible food ends up in the trash in the European Union every year. FoodLoop’s creators used tools provided by FI-WARE, an open cloud-based infrastructure to create new apps and services, which is part of the EU Public-Private Partnership on the Future Internet designed to help start-ups thrive in Europe. |
