On 12 December 2013 the European Commission decided to send urgently needed medical assistance to the Central African Republic (CAR). A plane carrying 37 tonnes of relief supplies will leave Brussels for the CAR capital Bangui on 14 December. This new airlift operation comes on top of a humanitarian air bridge operated by the EU between Bangui and Douala (Cameroon). On 16 December 2013, the European Commission announced that it is increasing its humanitarian aid by €18.5 million to the Central African Republic (CAR) to provide immediate life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable suffering in a crisis which has affected the country's entire population of 4.6 million. |
