The European Commission has approved British Energy's wide-ranging restructuring plan, paving the way for the nuclear group's survival. The Commission is satisfied that the new structure of British Energy will ensure that aid is exclusively used for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants in the future. According to the approval granted on 22 September 2004, State aid given for future decommissioning liabilities may not be used to subsidise competitive activities, such as the operation of a fossil fuel power plant and energy trading with large business customers. |
