The European Commission on 1 December 2004 retroactively authorised Italy to grant state aid of €169 million for the costs of compulsory destruction of specified risk materials (SRM) and the storage of low risk material as well as income aid for beef producers to counter the effects of the 2001 BSE ('mad cow disease') crisis. The state aid had been granted in 2001 without Commission approval. |
