Press Release: Commission authorises EDP acquisition of sole control over Hidrocantábrico

The European Commission has authorised the planned acquisition of sole control of Spain's utility company Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico (Hidrocantábrico) by Portuguese electricity company EDP-Electricidade de Portugal S.A. (EDP). Hidrocantábrico is presently controlled by EDP together with EnBW, a subsidiary of EDF, and CajAstur. The operation does not give rise to any competition concerns given that it is a change from joint to sole control and EDP/Hidrocantábrico face competition from other big players in Spain, 9 September 2004.
