On 19 June 2001, at the 44th Paris Air Show at Le Bourget (France), European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin opened the first meeting of the new Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE). The set-up of this council was recommended by a group of leading personalities from the aeronautics sector that, at the request of Philippe Busquin, formulated a 2020 Vision for European Aeronautics. The 2020 Vision, unveiled in Hamburg in January 2001, is to become a global leader in the world market with safer, less noisy and less polluting aircraft. The new advisory council will develop and implement a strategy for building the next generation European aircraft. It will define an agenda for a closer R&D co-operation between the European Commission, Member States, industry and the scientific community, in line with the objectives of a European Research Area.
