Press Release: Commission launches consultation on the law applicable to contractual obligations (‘Rome I’)

The European Commission adopted a Green Paper on the 14 January 2003 to launch a broad discussion about the desirability of a conversion of the existing 'Rome convention of 1980' on the law applicable to contractual obligations into a Community instrument and its modernisation. This initiative is part of the work of the European Union to create a genuine European area of Justice. Common rules in this area help to ensure the mutual recognition and enforcement of judicial decisions throughout the European Union .
