Preview of a set of environmental conferences under the auspices of the United Nations, to begin on 4 February 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The meetings, gathering environment ministers and senior officials from more than 180 countries sought to advance the global sustainability agenda, with a focus on chemicals management, energy, ecotourism and global environmental governance. A particular focus of the discussions was planned to be on a final agreement on a strategic approach to international chemicals management. Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas was to represent the European Commission at the conferences, which were to centre around the 7-9 February Global Ministerial Environmental Forum, which also served as a special session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). |
