Press Release: Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner confirmed long-term commitment in Afghanistan

Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy participated in the International Conference in Support of Afghanistan on 12 June in Paris. The Conference united 85 delegations and aimed at reaffirming the long-term partnership between the international community and Afghanistan. The Afghanistan Compact, launched in 2006, remained the basis of this partnership. Based on a strategic review of the Compact parties will enhance efforts in institution building and economic growth. At the same time, the Conference focused on aid effectiveness and Afghanistan’s political and economic reform agenda. The European Commission earmarked
€ 610 mio. for assistance to Afghanistan between 2007 and 2010 thus confirming its long-term commitment to assisting Afghanistan on its path of rebuilding the country.
