New measures designed to help safeguard the Scottish salmon farming industry, approved by the European Commission on 4 February 2005, were welcomed by the UK Trade Minister Douglas Alexander. Under the scheme, which will take effect from 6 February 2005, producers will be guaranteed a minimum price to cover their full production costs, and imports above a level to be calculated by the European Commission will be subject to an additional duty.The measures apply exclusively to farmed Atlantic salmon and not to wild salmon or other fish imports from third countries.
