The European Commission on 8 March 2005 took a decision on Poland's national allocation plan for CO2 emission allowances under the EU emissions trading scheme, which planned to reduce the total volume of allowances by 141.3 million tonnes (16.5%) for the period 2005-2007. With more than 1,100 installations in Poland covered by the trading scheme, the Polish plan was the largest among the new Member States and one of the four largest in the EU. The EU emissions trading scheme aimed to ensure that greenhouse gas emissions from the energy and industry sectors are cut at least cost to the economy.
