Press Release: Environment: Spain risking fines over failures to comply with nature conservation laws

The European Commission sent a final written warning about the Segarra-Garrigues irrigation project in Catalonia, where Spain had failed to comply with a court ruling which found that the works would affect areas important for the protection of steppic birds. Should Spain fail to take the necessary steps to remedy the situation the Commission may again bring it before the European Court of Justice and request that fines be imposed on Spain.
