Press Release: EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy opens door to reformulating EU position on new WTO Round

On 5.12.00, Commissioner Pascal Lamy said he thought the time had come for the European Union to consider reformulating its position if a new round of multilateral trade negotiations is to be launched. Commissioner Lamy was speaking at a press conference to mark the anniversary of the failure to launch a new round of World Trade Organisation negotiations in Seattle last year. He emphasised that the European Union was still committed to launching a new round that would improve market access and improve the organisation and rules of the WTO. He said that any adjustments in the EU's position would require consultations both within and outside the Union, and that the Commission would respond to the results with appropriate initiatives.
