The European Commission's monthly flash Eurobarometer conducted at the end of November 2001, one month before €-day, continues to show gaps in the awareness of euro-zone citizens. 6% of euro-area citizens do not know that the euro changeover will happen in 2002 ; 15% do not know that their euro coins can be used in other countries of the euro-zone and only 36% know the exact length of the transition period for their country. Moreover, there continues to be an urgent need for confidence building measures between governments, retailers and consumers, as 70% of citizens continue to fear that they will be cheated or that they will face price increases after the 1 January 2002. On the other hand 70 % of citizens also say they feel well informed, which shows positive progress |
