The European Commission welcomed on 29 October 2001 the Environment Council's political agreement on a Recommendation concerning Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). The Recommendation calls on EU Member States to develop national strategies that promote sustainable development in coastal zones through integrated management of these areas.
