The first internet-based register of industrial emissions to air and water was launched by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency in February 2004. The register has been a huge success with more than 100,000 visitors in its first three months. The Commission is now proposing to make it an even more comprehensive register, by upgrading it to a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR). The European PRTR will provide more data and better information: it will cover more pollutants, more industrial sources, more types of emissions and will be updated every year. This should make it even more useful for all its users - including the public, which has made extensive use of the first register. |
