The Council of Ministers and the European Parliament reached agreement on 18 December 2001on a proposal for a directive on the working time of lorry drivers which is designed to regulate working time at European level so that the average weekly working time may not exceed 48 hours but can be extended to 60 hours if the average of 48 hours per week is not exceeded during a four-month reference period.
