18 August 2005 was the deadline for all EU Member States top transpose into their national legislation an EU Directive setting higher recycling and recovery targets for packaging waste, including packaging made from paper, glass, metals, plastics and wood. The new Directive was to update and strengthen an earlier Directive from 1994. It aimed to further reduce the negative environmental impacts created by the landfilling and incineration of packaging waste and by the production of virgin materials. At the date of the deadline only Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom had informed the European Commission that they had transposed the Directive. |
