The European Commission in January 2006 adopted a Decision laying down detailed rules for the implementation of the Council Decision establishing a secure web-based Information and Co-ordination Network for Member States’ Migration Management Services. The purpose of this Decision was to ensure an effective development of this network – known as ICONET – in practice, in particular the rapid exchange of relevant information required by the Member States’ Migration Management Services in their fight against illegal immigration.
