The European Commission took an important step forward in the fight against poverty and social exclusion on 10 October 2001 when, for the first time ever, it adopted a report analysing governments' social inclusion policies. The report shows that the Commission, in pursuing the Lisbon summit goals, is committed to a socially cohesive Europe, both in its own right but also as a factor of economic competitiveness. The report must now be agreed between Commission and Council, and will go to the Laeken summit in December this year but it should provide a launchpad for strengthening policies and programmes across the EU through co-operation between Member States, in particular through the exchange of good practice. This co-operation will be further stimulated by the new five-year, €75 million social exclusion programme agreed on 18 September 2001 between European Council, the Parliament and the Commission. |
