The European Commission published the Spring 2002 Economic Forecasts on 24 April 2002 which show that the euro area economy contracted in the last quarter of 2001, but a gradual recovery is shaping up as confidence returns, depleted inventories are rebuilt and international trade picks up. The key to recovery gaining momentum in the first half of the year will be the amount of private consumption.
