At the International Seminar 'Neighbourhood Programmes' in Warsaw, Danuta Hübner, European Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, launched nine new cross-border and neighbourhood programmes between regions in several of the new Member States, accession countries and third countries, 27 January 2005. Several Ministers from the concerned countries attended the Conference. Covering 57 million citizens, these programmes were part of European Regional Policy and aimed at strengthening economic, social and territorial co-operation in the border regions and across frontiers. The total available funding from EU sources for the period 2004-2006 amounted to €260 million, the bulk of which (€215 million) will come from European Regional Policy's cross-border initiative INTERREG and the rest from financial instruments for accession and third countries (Tacis, Phare and CARDS). The European Union's resources will be combined with another €76 million from national and regional sources. |
