The European Commission on 22 June 2005 proposed far-reaching reforms to the Common Market Organisation for sugar. The changes were aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and market-orientation of the European Union sugar sector, granting it a viable long-term future and strengthening the EU's negotiating position in the current round of world trade talks. They would modernise a system, which has remained largely unchanged for around 40 years. The European Commission was hoping for a political agreement on the proposals at the Agriculture Council in November 2005. |
