The European Court of Auditors published on 5 November 2002 its 2001 Annual Report on the general budget of the European Union and the European Development Fund. The Court is of the opinion that the 2001 accounts give a true picture of the Communities' revenue and expenditure and of its financial situation, except for certain specified matters caused by weaknesses in the design of the accounting system on which the Court has repeatedly commented in the past. In its reply to the report, the European Commission recognises the problems and announces that an accounting reform plan will be launched as a matter of urgency. The Court will closely monitor the preparation and implementation of this plan and will report on its progress. |
