On 21 November 2001the European Commission endorsed a proposal to fix premiums and quotas for tobacco. It provides for a prolongation of the tobacco premium for three years from 2002 to 2004, updates the thresholds resulting in a significant reduction for varieties less in demand. The proposal also foresees a significant increase in the levy on tobacco subsidies used to finance reconversion measures for tobacco growers as well as campaigns against tobacco consumption. |
