Pressure on Finland, Denmark and Sweden to abolish current limits

on the quantity of alcohol and tobacco travellers can bring back from abroad intensified this week after the European Commission proposed a directive which would require the trio to phase them out by June 2002. The Commission said that, as a first step, the three countries should immediately reduce the minimum period for travellers to qualify for duty-free purchases from 36 to 24 hours.
