Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced on the 2 October 2015 that a general election would be held in Spain on the 20 December 2015.

The terrorist attacks hitting Paris on 13 November 2015 dictated a temporary suspension of the electoral campaign, as Spain sought to understand its own risks in terms of islamic terrorism.
