Europe is confronted with a major regulatory task, one that focuses not so much on the fundamental issue of which economic order is most suitable for the European Union or which economic principles lead to the greatest prosperity. This was already set out in the Treaties of Rome, and in the competition of systems the Western model has already emerged as undisputed winner. However, differing streams of thought continually crop up even within market-oriented economies - the recent resurfacing of the old conflict about national and European industrial policy provides clear evidence. EU Monitor is published by Deutsche Bank Research.
