Rumours abound that Xavier Larnaudie-Eiffel, chef de cabinet to Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy, is interested in taking over as director-general of economic and financial affairs (DGII).

If he gets the job, the charming chef - ironically known as “Tour d'Eiffel” - would be in charge of what has traditionally been a French fiefdom. But it is unclear whether current director-general Giovanni Ravasio, an Italian economist well connected with the French establishment, has plans to move on and if he does, where he would go.
