In a speech at the Saïd Business School in Oxford on 29 April 2002, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, sharply criticised the United Kingdom for its ambivalence of the euro and its emphasis on ties with Washington. However, Mr Prodi stepped back from some of the more severe comments in his prepared text.
