Günter Verheugen, the new European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, has promised to fight against regulation and will seek to reduce the burden of red tape on business over the next five years. Mr Verheugen also said he would seek ways of reducing the impact on industry of the European Union's controversial chemicals directive and a means of finally introducing a single EU patent.
