Proposal for a Council Decision amending Decision 2008/376/EC on the adoption of the Research Programme of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel and on the multiannual technical guidelines for this programme

Initiative tabled by the European Commission on 16 July 2020, introducing a number of amendments to Decision 2008/376/EC concerning the adoption of the Research Programme of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel and its technical guidelines.

Decision 2008/376/EC sets up the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and sets out the technical guidelines for the programme.

The purpose of the proposal put forward by the European Commission is to amend this Decision in order to align it with the scientific, technological and political objectives of the Community as stated by the Decision itself. It aims to revise the coal and steel research objectives of the RFCS Research Programme, taking into account the recommendations contained in the RFCS monitoring and assessment report, as well as advice from different stakeholders.

The amendments intend to bring the Research Programme in line with the Paris Agreement, the Commission's European Green Deal, Sustainable Europe Investment Plan, New Circular Economy Action Plan and New Industrial Strategy for Europe.
