Council Recommendation on learning for the green transition and sustainable development

Summary:

Recommendation - adopted by the Council of the European Union on 16 June 2022 - concerning the learning for environmental sustainability. This is a text with EEA relevance.

The Recommendation urges Member States of the European Union (EU) to stimulate and support policies and programmes about learning for the green transition and sustainable development. Countries are also recommended to:

• Establish learning for the green transition and sustainable development as one of the priority areas in education and training policies and programmes;
• Provide learning opportunities in formal, non-formal and informal settings;
• Support and enhance teaching and learning for the green transition and sustainable development by providing infrastructure, digital tools and resources;
• Provide fact-based and accessible information on the climate, environmental and biodiversity crisis and its drivers;
• Help educators to take part in professional development programmes related to sustainability.

The draft Recommendation was put forward by the European Commission on 14 January 2022, following a consultation on the state of play regarding learning opportunities for environmental sustainability in the EU. A report mapping out the competences needed for the green transition was published by the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) on the same day.. The Council of the European Union adopted it on 16 June 2022. The Recommendation was published in the Official Journal on 27 June 2022.
