Summary:

Decision (EU) 2021/2084 - adopted by the co-legislators on 24 November 2021 - concerning concerning the participation of the European Union (EU) in the European Partnership on Metrology.

Further information:

Horizon Europe aims to achieve a greater impact on research and innovation by leveraging additional private and public funds via co-investment through European Partnerships. In this context, metrology was acknowledged by the co-legislators as a priority area for the programme. Metrology is the scientific study of measurement.

This initiative builds on the lessons learnt from the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) and the European Metrology Programme on Innovation and Research (EMPIR). However, it represents a new partnership to meet new challenges. It is not intended as a mere continuation of previous programmes. It concerns the participation of the European Union in the European metrology programme undertaken by several Member States.

The draft Decision was tabled by the European Commission on 23 February 2021. The Council of the European adopted its general approach on 23 June. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text for this file was reached on 8 October. This was formally endorsed by the Council on 18 November 2021. The Act was published in the Official Journal on 30 November 2021.
