Summary:

Council Decision of 25 March 2019 establishing the position to be taken on behalf of the Union regarding the application by the United Kingdom to accede to the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Convention (NEAFC).

Further information:

The principal objective of the Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in the North-East Atlantic Fisheries (NEAFC Convention) is to promote the conservation and optimum utilisation of the fishery resources of the North-East Atlantic area and to encourage international cooperation and consultation with respect to these resources. The Convention entered into force on 17 March 1982.

The NEAFC Convention currently applies to the United Kingdom as a result of the European Union being a contracting party to the Convention. This will end when the UK is no longer a Member State of the Union. On 8 January 2019, the UK submitted an application to accede to the NEAFC Convention as a contracting party, in view of the possible absence of a withdrawal agreement.

Accession to the NEAFC Convention will allow the UK to cooperate on the necessary fishery management measures with due regard to the rights, interests and duties of other countries and the Union, with a view to ensuring that fishing activities are carried out in a way that results in the sustainable exploitation of the stock or stocks concerned.
